The school District of Lake Holcombe is excited to highlight our final staff spotlight for the school year, Shawna Strzok! Shawna started here at Lake Holcombe in January and she is serving as an elementary paraprofessional. Did you know that Shawna loves to write and is in the process of writing a book?! We asked her some questions to get to know her, and her responses are below. Thanks for the fun and final spotlight, Shawna!
*What 3 traits define you? I like to think I’m kind. We all need to demonstrate more kindness. That’s really the only one that matters.
*What is your personal philosophy? Be unapologetically you. You only get one shot at this life so you better be yourself and make the most of it.
*What’s one thing you couldn’t live without? My kids and grandkids. Everything I do is for them.
*What is the greatest challenge you have had to overcome in your life thus far?
Learning to be brave.
*What is the one thing you cannot resist? Books.
*Where is your favorite place to be? Any place that is above 80* and near the ocean.
*What is your favorite thing to do? Write
*Where is the best place you’ve traveled to and why? Any place that includes my sisters and cousin because we have the most incredible times together.
*What does true leadership mean to you? Bringing out the best in others.
*What has been the most important innovation you have witnessed in your lifetime? Smart phones.
*What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t doing this? I would be an author. I’m almost done with my first book.
*If you could do another job for just one day, what would it be? I would be POTUS.
*What would you most like to tell yourself at age 13? That would take an entire book, but mostly just to believe in myself. Life is SO much better after all of the junior high and high school drama.
*What are your three most overused words/phrases? Seriously. Holy guacamole. And I really, really love to use the F-bomb when socially acceptable.
*How do you define success? Loving what you are doing. And if you can also make money doing what you love, that’s even better!
*What is the best book you have ever read? I have had different favorites at different points in my life. In elementary it would have been the Little House series and anything by Beverly Cleary. As an angsty tween it would have been Are You There God, It’s Me, Margaret. In high school I was into Clan of the Cave Bear and Valley of Horses and anything written by Christopher Pike. I love Nancy Turner books and Anthem by Ayn Rand. Jodi Piccoult and Kristen Hannah have written a lot of good books. You just can’t beat a good Judy Blume book though.
*Tell us something that might surprise us about you. My mother is the 5th child of a family with 18 children. My grandmother was one of 10 kids, and she married an only child. Then ended up with 18 kids (only 1 set of twins). I can’t count all of my first cousins – it’s easily over 40. The youngest child was an aunt before she was even born. My mother (#5) and her sister (#4) married brothers, so I have double-cousins which was fun. We were always together at every family function because we have the exact same relatives!
